For the new edition of the Dutch boardgame called: Het Grote Basisschoolspel (literally translated: The Big Elementary School Game) I made all the illustrations.
The board has two sides, so the game can be played by children from different ages. That's why I also had to illustrate in 2 different styles, one for young children, and one for slightly older children.

These were the biggest illustrations I made in my life so far and I had a lot of fun making them!

For one side, which I wanted to give a more 'collage' feel, I made a couple of stickers to put into the illustration, as a Bonus, you can see them all together below!

I love playing videogames!
Besides fun, they are a huge source of inspiration for my illustration work.

So, as a homage to the dozens of characters I had these great adventures with and explored the most beautiful worlds with, I'm going to draw a couple of them every now and then.

Above the first two: Banjo & Kazooie from the N64 games: Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie

I actually never owned a Nintendo 64, but every holliday I used to rent one, just to play one of these two games (and Mario 64).
I loved the art style, the soundtrack was amazing and the dialogues were hilarious.
Banjo & Kazooie are in my opinion the funniest characters I ever played with!

The project I've been working on for quite a long time now, Tekenclub, is online!

Tekenclub (or Drawingclub) is a website we created to show Dutch kids how wonderful and fun drawing actually can be, without all the silly restrictions parents and teachers give them at home or at school. Together with the characters Pen, Ink and Gom (= Dutch for eraser), the children embark on an unforgettable trip through online interactive worlds, and discover all aspects of making a picture.

In the video above you can see the making of one of my illustrations. I recorded my desktop during the creation of an illustrated scene where a cowboy enters a saloon. The original rendering process took me around 5 hours, and it’s sped up here to about 15 minutes.

And will premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, on the 29th of January.
And there wll be 2 more screenings, one on:

and one on:
1 February, Venster 1, Rotterdam, 22:15

With her red hair, pigtails and big glasses, little Jenny is an easy target for all the bullies at school. But with her brother Jake around, she's 100% save!

I used this weeks topic at IF (again) to test my brand new Wacom Cintiq. And I immediately fell in love with it, the LCD-screen adds so much more feeling and possibilities than a normal tablet does.

Tekenclub (Drawingclub) is a project I started together with some talented artists here in the Netherlands. The goal is to show the Dutch kids, how wonderful and fun drawing actually can be! Without all the silly restrictions parents and teachers give them at home or at school.
Together with Ink, Gom and Pen, the children go on a unforgettable trip through the amazing online interactive worlds of drawing, and discover all the facets of the craft.

The project is made possible by the Fiep Westendorp Foundation, named after (well, in my opinion) the best dutch children's book illustrators of all time.
The core mission of the foundation is to bring joy into the lives of children, especially of those who could use a little bit more of it. In this way it fulfils a heartfelt wish of Fiep Westendorp.
And besides that the Fiep Westendorp Foundation also supports other projects and initiatives designed to develop artistic sensitivity in children.

I'm very busy right now creating the worlds, designing the website and crystalizing the concept.
So if you would like to keep informed, please check this weblog every now and then in the future for some updates with all the ins and outs of Tekenclub!

My good friend Arjan gave me a very nice lightbox a couple of weeks ago and untill now I didn't have enough time to test or use it. These are the first drawings I made on it.
After finishing these, I came to the conclusion that I almost forgot how much fun it is to actually 'draw' things!
Hopefully I'm able to take more time to practice my lines, drawing hands and shapes. Because these are far from perfect yet.

I'm very busy right now producing backgrounds for Ka-Ching's horror movie 'the 3d Machine'
I always loved creating little universes and this is probably one of the most fun things I ever did!
Above you can see one of the backgrounds I made so far, with the two main characters standing behind the main subject in the movie, the 3d machine.

A little detail with the professor and his assistant. I didn't design these, but i think they are really nice!

In Holland we've got this wonderful candy, called 'zure matten', they are delicious!! Sometimes I buy a large bag, open my mouth and I just keep eating it, and I won't stop till the bag's empty!

Here are 2 sketches I made for Ka-Ching Cartoons their new short film, the 3d Machine!
A very cool film in 3d (not like in the Pixar movies, but actually with the red and blue glasses) inspired by old horror classics.
It's the first time I'm trying to make something in the horror genre, and I think it can be much scarrier. But, as a first attempt they're quite okay.

De Beloning van de Koning

Ladies and Gentlemen,

'De Beloning van de Koning,' the first childrens book I illustrated, is finally in stores!
It's the story (on rhyme) of a creedy king who keeps raising the taxes and litteraly gets stuck in it's own wealth.

When I was a little kid, I (like every illustrator in is younger years) used to draw my own comicbooks and offcourse it was my biggest dream to make a real comic one day. So, it's quiet obvious that I'm really excited, glad, relieved and most of all extremely happy and proud (even though it's not a real comic) to finally have accomplished my dream! It's so cool to walk in a bookstore and see your own book on the shelves!

They are about this little girl and her robot visiting a new and undiscovered planet. Though the reason for their journey is just curiosity and science, the natives doesn't seem to like their presence!

Monsterdoll

When celebrating Sinterklaas (the Dutch equivalent of Santa Claus), some people (including my family) decide, instead of getting the presents from Sinterklaas, to make little gifts themselves and give them to each other. So good old Sint has a little bit less work.
This year I made a Zwarte Piet doll (Zwarte piet is Sinterklaas his helper). Unfortunately I wasn't able to take any pictures of it. But it was so much fun to make the doll, that I wanted to make more little dolls, with the leftovers.
You can see the first one above! It's a cute little monster that can also be worn as a bracelet. It also has a little pocket on his back where you can put a coin (or something else small) in!

Billy and Bob are 2 identical twins. And as any other twin, they both love the same things. For example: playing outside all day and eating good and healthy food.
On the other hand their little brother John, though family, is actually quitte the opposite. He rather likes to stay inside, watch television and eat hamburgers!

John sometimes tries to play outside instead of watching the tv, but with less succes.

Illustration Friday: Portrait
Arjan Wilschut (the big chief at this small Animation Studio I'm working for right now) is, if you ask me, an extremely good animator, who made some really cool movies, like Penguin's Christmas, Hard Boiled Chicken and he animated a big part of the Academy Award winning movie Father and Daughter (right click, save as)
But I recently found out he's also a very good Illustrator (he won't admit that, if you ask him.. but I think he is!) So while he was drawing some characters lately, I asked him if I could color some of them. And the endresult, which fits this week's Illustration Friday Portrait theme quite well I think, are the two illustrations you see above!
